Control4 in 2026: The Case for the System That Doesn’t Show Off
If Crestron is the platform for the most ambitious homes in our portfolio, Control4 is the platform for almost every other home where automation is a serious priority. We are a Control4 Platinum Dealer — Control4’s top tier, awarded to the small group of dealers who install at the highest volume and quality — and we recommend it on more projects than any other system we sell. There is a reason.
The thing Control4 gets right that most systems don’t
Most control systems are designed to win on the spec sheet. Control4 is designed to win on Sunday morning, when a homeowner walks into the kitchen and the lights, music, and shades have already done what they should have done. The platform’s whole architecture is built around polish — the interface is clean, the response is fast, the experience is consistent across the wall keypad, the touchpanel, the remote, and the phone. It is, in our view, the most refined consumer-facing automation experience in the industry.
That polish is what makes it the right call on most luxury homes. The truth that nobody in the AV press wants to admit is that the vast majority of homeowners do not need the unlimited customization of a Crestron Studio installation. They need a home that works, that looks beautiful, that the family can use without thinking. Control4 delivers that with less bespoke engineering, faster, and with an interface the family will actually be glad to use every day.
Where Control4 OS 3 changed the conversation
Control4’s OS 3 — and the continuing OS 3+ evolutions — fundamentally repositioned the platform. The interface is now genuinely elegant. The room-aware UI is intuitive. Voice integration with the major platforms is robust. And the underlying driver ecosystem — the library of integrations Control4 maintains with third-party products — is broader than any competing system except Crestron’s.
For the homeowner, this translates into a system that integrates almost anything: every major TV brand, every major audio platform, Lutron lighting and shades, all the leading thermostats, the lock manufacturers, the cameras, the gates, the pool controllers. The driver library is the unsung strength of the platform. We have integrated equipment on Control4 that simply does not have official drivers on any other major system.
The Platinum tier — and what it actually means
Control4 awards Platinum status to dealers based on installation volume, technical training, and customer outcomes. We have held the designation for more than a decade. The reason that matters to a homeowner is access — to factory engineering when a complex project needs custom drivers, to product roadmap previews before launch, to a level of technical support that turns difficult installations into ordinary ones.
It also matters because Platinum dealers tend to install more Control4 than anyone else, which means we know the platform’s strengths and weaknesses intimately. We can tell you the moment a project crosses the line into Crestron territory, and we can tell you which Control4 systems and accessories punch above their weight. Experience does that. Sales literature does not.
What we install on a typical Control4 luxury home
A flagship Control4 home in Scottsdale or Paradise Valley generally includes:
- An EA-5 or CORE 5 controller as the brain — the platform’s flagship processor.
- Halo Touch remotes in the primary rooms and theater. The Halo is, in our view, the best handheld remote in residential AV — capacitive controls, beautiful screen, a single-button experience that works from the couch.
- T4 touchscreens in the kitchen, primary suite, and any other high-traffic walls. Larger screens for media rooms, in-wall units for everyday surfaces.
- Triad amplification driving Focal architectural speakers across the property — Control4’s own audio family, which integrates more seamlessly than third-party amps.
- Lutron lighting and shades beneath the Control4 layer, exactly as we would on a Crestron home. The right tools for the right layer.
- Networking by Access Networks — Control4’s professional networking arm, designed specifically for residential AV traffic.
That stack delivers an experience nearly indistinguishable from a Crestron home at a fraction of the engineering investment. On most luxury projects, that is the right answer.
When we recommend Control4 — and when we don’t
We recommend Control4 when:
- The homeowner wants a polished, consumer-facing experience over deep custom programming.
- The project timeline favors a faster deployment.
- The home is large but not architecturally extreme — six to twelve subsystems rather than twenty.
- The family wants strong third-party integration, especially with consumer products that Crestron supports more slowly or not at all.
We propose Crestron instead when the home demands custom programming we can’t easily express in Control4’s driver model, when the architecture needs deeply custom interfaces, or when the homeowner specifically wants the engineering depth that Crestron offers.
Three decades of luxury AV, in one observation
The single best observation we can offer after thirty years of installations is this: a system that works every day, that the family actually uses, is worth more than a system with more capability that nobody touches. Control4’s relentless focus on the everyday experience is what makes it the right choice for most luxury homes. It is not trying to be the most powerful platform in the industry. It is trying to be the platform the family is glad to live with. That is the harder problem, and Control4 solves it as well as anyone.
If you are weighing Control4 against the alternatives for a Scottsdale or Paradise Valley project, we’d be glad to walk you through the comparison — honestly, with no platform allegiance — and help you decide which one fits the home.
