The MadVR Envy is an external video processor that sits between your source and your projector, performing HDR tone mapping, upscaling, and color correction that no consumer projector or TV is capable of on its own. HDR tone mapping, done right.

HDR content is mastered to 1,000 to 10,000 nits of peak brightness. Even the best home projectors output 50–100 nits on a typical screen. Without tone mapping, the highlights clip, the colors desaturate, and the HDR “wow” disappears. MadVR Envy performs real-time scene-by-scene tone mapping that preserves the studio's intended look while adapting to your specific projector and screen. The difference is night and day in any theater above $50K.

Upscaling that looks better than native.

The Envy's upscaling algorithms — particularly NGU Sharp — outperform the native 4K decoding in any consumer device. We have shown clients side-by-side comparisons of a 1080p Blu-ray played through Envy versus a 4K stream of the same film, and the Envy-upscaled version wins on every measurable axis. For older films and TV catalog content, Envy is the difference between watchable and reference.

When MadVR makes sense.

Envy is not for every theater. It is the right call when: (1) you have a projector capable of resolving the additional detail, (2) you have a screen surface and ambient light control to support HDR, and (3) your sources include physical media or Kaleidescape (where the bitrate is high enough to upscale meaningfully). For everyday TV in the great room, Envy is overkill. For the dedicated cinema where every visual decision matters, it is non-negotiable.
